Champions League: Galatasaray Humbled In Madrid
The Turkish champions Galatasaray were by far the worse team on the field tonight in Spain against a Real Madrid side who held no fear without Cristiano Ronaldo.
The fact of the matter is that early on in the game, they were dealt yet another blow when Sergio Ramos was ejected from the match after appearing to halt the breakaway of Umut Bulut in a one-on-one play. At that moment, even I believed that they were going to have difficulty winning this match.
Boy, was that a stupid assumption. It all started with a Gareth Bale free kick which was rapidly answered by a Bulut slot home after the most beautiful through-ball from Didier Drogba just a minute later. The first half ended in that fashion, but the second half brought goals from Alvaro Arbeloa, Angel Di Maria and Isco to seal all three points for the home side in a well-deserved victory.
The biggest problem with Galatasaray is the fact that they still played with so much fear despite being a man up throughout the majority of the match. They literally watched Madrid pass the ball around with so much ease while creating a plethora of scoring opportunities.
This was an impressive win for the home side, but the fact that their opponents did not try to play anywhere near their best level of excellence made it a joke to watch. Obviously the home side is much more technically gifted, but if the visitors stepped up their game a bit more, this would have been much closer, especially since they were a man down.
Now, Gala sit two points behind Juventus in third as they defeated FC Copenhagen by a score of 3-1 at home. The Turks will host the Italian side on the final matchday to fight for their Round of 16 passage.
