The Portland Timbers have been very successful with Argentinean players as of late, and it seems like the management won’t stop looking into that market when signing reinforcements.
Attacking midfielder Diego Valeri and forward Maximiliano Urruti were the first two players to join the team, and during this offseason the Timbers added striker Gaston Fernandez and defender Norberto Paparatto to solidify their backbone. However, several pundits are indicating that Portland is ready to add another Argentinean midfielder to the roster in a move that should be sealed in the coming days.
Defensive midfielder Agustin Pelletieri – a natural ball-winner and a leader in the center of the pitch – is close to finalizing a transfer to the MLS, and he would be a great addition for the Timbers if the move is completed. Pelletieri has a reputation of being one of the best midfielders in the league, and he even has experience with the Argentina National Team so he could be a great signing for the franchise.
The remaining issue for Portland is that they have all the international spots currently filled out – Kalif Alhassan, Alvas Powell, Frederic Piquionne and Pa Modou Kah are all under contract aside from the four Argentineans – and it remains to be seen how Portland will manage that situation.
They would be wise to cut ties with someone in order to guarantee Pelletieri a spot on the roster. His arrival will be a solid signing for Portland’s midfield, and he has all the tools to even be an All-Star in MLS.
