Heading into the English Premier League season, there was a lot of optimism surrounding Everton F.C. But following their fourth straight EPL loss on New Year’s Day to lowly Hull City, the Toffees are officially in crisis mode. Everton are firmly in the bottom half, showing little signs of life and in danger of plummeting even further down the table.
Entering the second season under manager Roberto Martinez, the Toffees were fresh off a top-five finish in the Premier League last season, and Martinez vowed to go all-in during Europa League matches in hopes of winning that cup and gaining entry into the Champions League next season. Everton won their Europa League group and is in good standing in that competition, but their Premier League campaign has been an utter disaster.
Early in the Premier League season Everton were in fine form, but their results were not indicative of their performance. The Toffees left a lot of points on the field, as they tied games that should have been won and found ways to lose games in which they deserved a draw. Those results put Everton mid-table early in the season, and when their schedule started to get busy with both league and cup games in October and November, the Toffees could not find the consistency necessary to move up.
Lately, things have gone from bad to worse, as Everton lost all four of their league matches over the last two weeks, being outscored 9-2 over that span. To add injury to insult, goalkeeper Tim Howard suffered an injury that will keep him off the field for up to six weeks, adding to the troubles of what has been a problematic Everton defense this season.
That four-game losing streak has dropped Everton to 13th in the EPL, just four points clear of the relegation zone. Following an FA Cup match against West Ham United, three of Everton’s next five league matches are against the likes of Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea, which will not make it easy for the Toffees to turn things around. After the loss to Hull City, even upcoming matches against Crystal Palace and West Bromwich Albion are not guarantees to produce points for Everton.
The Toffees still have enough quality to get things turned around, and one good result against a quality team may be all it takes to get Everton moving in the right direction. But at the moment, there is no semblance of positive momentum for Everton, and all of the preseason momentum has disappeared. Martinez and his club are in crisis mode, as Everton are in danger of letting their season get away from them and falling even further down the EPL table.
