Frank Martin Brings Renewed Passion To South Carolina Basketball
After spending five seasons coaching the Kansas State Wildcats, Frank Martin has decided to move on to a new challenge and become the head coach at the University of South Carolina.
The move to South Carolina will help jump start a program that has found itself in the cellar. The Gamecocks finished this past season with an 10-21 overall record along with a paltry 2-14 mark in SEC play. After their dismal season USC fired Darrin Horn and less than two weeks later they have already found their next guy, Martin, and he is a great fit for the program.
USC needed a renwed passion for their program and Martin, being very passionate himself to say the least, is the right guy to instill a new mentatlity in Columbia. He won’t accept mediocrity and he will make sure that the players who don the garnet red will play his way or they will ride the bench. Martin brings in a fiery coaching style (along with his patented death stare) that will make an immediate impact on a squad that just finished one of their worst seasons in program history.
South Carolina has struggled to find its footing in the SEC and they thought they brought in the right guy to turn the program around in 2008 when they hired Horn from Western Kentucky. Horn just led the Hilltoppers to a Sweet Sixteen appearance and was one of the hottest coaches in the country. It didn’t work out in Columbia as he went 60-63 in his four seasons including a 23-41 record in conference play.
Martin will do more than turn around the program, he will change the culture. After suffering through three straight losing seasons Martin will turn the Gamecocks into contenders within a few years and it’s something that USC fans can look forward to, oh and getting to witness the “death stare” in person is a new perk too.
