Hall of Fame Coach Larry Brown Interviewing with SMU Mustangs
Derick E. Hingle-US PRESSWIRE

According to several sources, long-time collegiate and NBA coach Larry Brown is in Dallas today to meet with the Southern Methodist University Mustangs regarding their head basketball coach opening.

Notorious for being somewhat of a job-hopper, Brown has been out of basketball since 2010, when he finished a two-year coaching stint with the NBA’s cellar-dweller, the Charlotte Bobcats. Since 2010, Brown has been involved in the game, but not on the sideline, and has recently expressed the desire to return to coaching as soon as the right chance came around.

SMU fired Matt Doherty after six seasons on March 13, and has been in the process of identifying candidates since. Doherty, once thought to be a rising star in the coaching world has struggled in four stops at Notre Dame, North Carolina, Florida Atlantic, and in Dallas with the Mustangs compiling a 176-180 career record.

Other candidates are also in Dallas today to interview with SMU, including Marquette assistant coach Tony Benford.

Larry Brown, being a Hall of Fame coach, will not have to play the political cards to get a job, if a team wants him bad enough, he’ll get the right opportunity– and it’s very reasonable this could come in Dallas with the Mustangs.

SMU is a school with all of the resources necessary to be much more competitive than they have over the course of time, but to do so they need a larger-than-life personality that may help them get the first-tier recruits from the Metroplex which have evaded them prior to now.

If the SMU athletic administration decides to extend an offer to Larry Brown, it could indeed be that transcendent moment that takes the program from being an afterthought in Texas basketball to one of the state’s up-and-coming.

In short, what does SMU have to lose?
