Goal Posts in Right Field at Wrigley.

What is left of the ivy has turned red, but a blue-gray gridiron sky and purple end zones will take center stage when Northwestern hosts Illinois at Wrigley Field this Saturday in the first college football game played at the Friendly Confines since 1938.

Wrigley Field used to host many college and pro football games years ago. The Chicago Bears called it their home for 49 years until 1970. When Gale Sayers tied an NFL record with six touchdowns, he did it at Wrigley.

The Illinois-Northwestern game is sold out but there are plenty of tickets available through Stub Hub and other sources. Stub Hub lists a price range between $49 and $400. Be careful where your tickets are located. The playing field has one end zone running from third base to home plate with the other end zone up against the right field wall. One sideline pretty much runs along the first base/right field line. Try to get your tickets in the right field bleachers, behind home plate or along the first base side of the field. If you end up in left field or down the third base line make sure to bring your binoculars.

The end zones don’t have much room to spare. Catching a pass at the back of the end zone will be tricky  and the brick wall under the ivy will be waiting like a mean linebacker. If you are on North Sheffield  outside the ballpark   you just may get a football on an extra point as the goal post is just in front of the right field baskets that normally swallow up baseballs. That could make a great trivia question down the road- who kicked a football out of Wrigley Field?

ESPN Game Day will host their studio show from Wrigley Field and ESPNU will televise the game at 2:30 p.m. CST.
