College Football Recruiting: Michigan Nabs First 2014 Recruit

Brady Hoke continues to make noise on the recruiting trail in Ann Arbor for the Wolverines.

Michigan put together a top-ten class in 2012 and are on their way to securing a top-five class in 2013. Not too bad of a start for Hoke in his first two seasons.

As you’d expect, now that the 2013 class is almost in the books, Hoke is doing damage for the 2014 class. Last night Michigan got news that linebacker Michael Ferns out of Saint Clairsville, Ohio committed to Big Blue, making him their first commit in the 2014 class.

Midwest recruiting analyst Allen Trieu ranks Ohio prospect and says he expects the 6-foot-3, 235-pound Ferns to be a four-star prospect when Rivals is able to release their rankings. Ferns also received offers from Notre Dame, Penn State, Oklahoma, Stanford and rival Ohio State.

One thing is for sure — Brady Hoke can recruit in the state of Ohio.

He can thank Jim Tressel for that though during the past two season. His first recruiting class in 2012 included nine players from the state of Ohio, the most of any state. The second most was out of Michigan with eight.

Even since Urban Meyer came on the scene in Columbus, Hoke and Michigan haven’t had any problems bringing in top-rated recruits from Ohio. In 2013, Big Blue has pledges from Ohio’s No. 1 player at safety in Dymonte Thomas, tailback DeVeon Smith and tight end Jake Butt.

They also have two top players at linebacker in Ben Gedeon and Mike McCray.

Now that Ferns is set to arrive on campus in 2014, the defense at Michigan could be scary.

Michigan is coming.
