Texas Tech Football Players Charged With Felony Credit Card Abuse

With the arrival of head coach Tommy Tuberville– in the wake of the departure of popular former head coach Mike Leach– football fans in Lubbock had a reason to be optimistic.

With a 2011 5-7 finish (2-7 in Big XII play) expectations have leveled, and the pressure is firmly on the shoulders of Tommy Tuberville. Given recent reports that Tuberville may be investigated for fraud due to filing of false tax documents, today’s reports are even more damaging to the Texas Tech football program.

Sources are reporting that Red Raiders Jace Amaro and Kenny Williams have been charged by Lubbock police with felony second-degree credit card abuse following an arrest for underage drinking at a local establishment on Friday evening.

Both Amaro and Williams were significant contributors to the Red Raiders at their respective positions during the 2011 season.

The pair rang up over $100 in credit card charges for drinks purchased over the course of the evening, and upon trying to close out their tab, left a large tip on the credit card receipt in an attempt to bribe a bartender who then realized neither of the players’ names matched the name on the credit card being used and called Lubbock police.

Athletic Director Blane Beal had the following response to the incident:

Texas Tech will allow the Lubbock Police Department to conduct its investigation into the matter involving two football student-athletes. Once that investigation has been completed and more facts are known, the university and head coach Tommy Tuberville will take appropriate disciplinary action if necessary.

Oh, the irony.

Beal speaks here about Tuberville taking disciplinary action on a couple of players who blatantly broke the law while Tuberville himself is being investigated for allegedly breaking the law on a monumental scale.

If these incidents are any indication of the state of affairs of Texas Tech football, the administration’s eyebrows are sure to have been raised.

Soon enough, fans will be longing for Mike Leach.
