Los Angeles Dodgers Almost Signed Prince Fielder
The Los Angeles Dodgers, currently parsing through billion-dollar bids for the franchise, nearly landed Prince Fielder.
According to CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman, the Dodgers offered the former Milwaukee Brewer a seven-year contract in the $160 million range. It included an opt-out after four seasons which would have allowed both sides to part had Fielder’s weight become a problem or if he simply wanted to try his luck as a DH.
Heyman notes that Los Angeles figured itself to be the front-runner until Detroit swooped in last weekend and offered nine years and $214 million.
Outgoing Dodgers owner Frank McCourt never saw a dollar he couldn’t spend so it’s no surprise he signed off on the pursuit.
The signature west coast franchise is slated to sell for over $1.5 billion in the coming months with Magic Johnson, Mark Cuban, the Disney Family and Peter O’Malley among a bevy of celebrity bidders.
Had Los Angeles secured Fielder, it would have been the second massive contract signed by a Dodger this offseason as Matt Kemp agreed to stay in California for eight years, $160 million.
