Think back to the glory days of the Pittsburgh Steelers. What comes to mind?

Running the football and smash mouth defense.

Well that’s what the Steelers organization wanted to do. Get back to their roots. And to do that, they had to somehow replace current offensive coordinator Bruce Arians.

The Rooney family wanted the Steelers to return to their blue-collar style of running the ball but that was not Arians style so the Steelers did not offer him a new contract. If you ask the organization, they will say that Arians contract expired and that he chose to retire. But if you step back and look at the situation, it certainly looks like the team no longer wanted a pass-happy offense so they didn’t offer him a new contract, seemingly forcing Arians out of a job.

This news was to the chagrin of Steelers starting quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. Roethlisberger prefers to throw the ball, and what quarterback doesn’t? When Arians job was in jeopardy in 2009, it was Big Ben who stepped up to support his coordinator. After all it was Arians who changed the offense to better suit Ben’s passing abilities, no wonder Roethlisberger is not happy about the change. But what he has to realize is that this is a business and not everyone is going to agree with every decision made.

The Steelers offense finished 10th in passing this season averaging over 253 yards per game but finished a middling 14th in rushing averaging 118 yards per game.

Even though the Steelers were in the Super Bowl last season, and won one as recently as 2008, the NFL has always been a “what can you do for me now” business. It seems as if the Rooney family didn’t like the way the steelers were headed so change was in store.
