Bruins beat Hawks in Rock, Paper Scissors
Well, the Bruins didn’t jump out early against the Hawks but still were able to find a way to get two points against the 2010 Cup Champions. The Bruins shoot out victory earned them their second win of the season after being tied 2-2 at the end of regulation and no goals coming in the over time period. Tyler Seguin was the lone shooter to score in the shoot-out.
The Blackhawk’s Bryan Bickell scored first off a turnover at center ice by Andrew Ference in the second period, where he took the puck into the zone a fired a low shot from the slot past Thomas.
The Bruins answered back with a short-handed goal at 1:33 into the second with Chris Kelly and Rich Peverley completing a very nice 2 on 1 off of a shot-block on Brent Seabrook.
The penalty kill was working for the Bruins tonight but the powerplay continued to struggle being shutout again by the Hawks penalty kill. The Bruins are now 1 for 21 on the powerplay. Just a mere 27 seconds after killing off the penalty on Nathan Horton for goaltender interference Patrick Kane put the Blackhawks ahead again when Kane took a pass from Sean O’Donnell and slipped it five hole on Thomas.
But the Bruins came out in the third motivated and hungry and would not be denied. Johnny Boychuk slipped a nice pass from behind the net to Nathan Horton who ripped a shot past the Hawk’s Crawford from the left circle.
The Bruins seemed to have the better of the opportunities late in the game but all were thwarted by Crawford including a Peverley missing the net on a breakaway after beating Crawford and a shot from Seidenberg which rang off the post late in the third.
Thomas was strong in the net making 27 of 29 shots through regulation and the overtime period, then shutting out the Hawks top three of Toews, Kane and fellow University of Vermont alum Patrick Sharp.
Gregory Campbell and new Hawk Jamal Mayers got into a scrap that was a pretty decisive victory for Mayers. As I said in the preview John Scott played about 6 minutes last night and was a complete non-factor in the game and on the fight card. He is as big as Chara but NO WHERE near the skill or hockey knowledge of Chara.
The Bruins will look to continue righting the ship after last night’s victory Tuesday, when the Hurricanes, who beat the Bruins 3-2 last Wednesday travel to the TD Gardens to take on the Bruins.
