I decided to break up the Hurricanes game last night into two posts since in my opinion, the Bruins are hurting themselves with their play. It just seemed more evident last night with the large number of penalties and the score board seemed to reflect the same idea.

Tuomo Ruutu, Joni Pitkanen, Anthony Stewart and Eric Staal all scored in last night’s 4-1 defeat. Stewart opened up the scoring just 2:47 into the first period when he cleaned up a rebound from a shot off of Tuuka Rask beating Matt Bartkowski to the loose puck.

That was it for scoring until the Hurricanes followed up in the second period when Joni Pitkanen ripped a slap shot at 10:19 into the second period.

The Bruins were able to fight there way back to within one on a Rich Peverley power play goal where he ripped a wrist shot past Cam Ward. Peverley’s power play goal was the Bruins first since their first power play of the season breaking an 0 for 22 scoreless streak. Shortly after the goal Nathan Horton was given a double minor for roughing followed shortly after by the Chara committing his fourth penalty of the game earning two minutes for high sticking.

Staal was able to score on the Hurricane’s two man advantage putting them back up by two goals 3-1 with 6:34 left to play. Ruutu was able to finish off the Bruins after capitalizing on another Hurricanes two man advantage with the secondary assist going to former Bruin Tomas Kaberle.

Claude Julien was given a game misconduct with 3:44 left in the game. The Bruins had to finish the game without Julien as well as Brad Marchand and Milan Lucic who both received a ten minute misconduct with less than ten minutes remaining in the game.

Cam Ward stopped 33 out of 34 shots for the Hurricanes and Rask stopped 19 of 23. Rask skated down the ice to have a few words with Ward after the Chara fight but neither dropped the gloves, earning Rask a two minute penalty for leaving the crease.

Bruins face the Maple Leafs Thursday night at the TD Garden. Puck drop at 7:00 PM EDT. Check back tomorrow for a full preview.
