The Bruins struggles in play recently have been concerning to fans.  They have been conjuring up memories of the Bruins from a few years ago.  The team that struggled to put in a full 60 minute effort.  The team that had so much potential, just to be unceremoniously dumped from the playoffs each year.

Remember the loss to the Philadelphia Flyers two years ago, when the B’s were up in games, 3-0, only to lose four consecutive games?  Arguably the worst moment in Bruins history.  But don’t forget the previous year, when the Bruins were in a game 7 on home ice after climbing back into a series against Carolina.  The big kick in the pants in that game was the OT series winning goal was scored by new B’s villain Scott Walker, who just a few days before that, gave B’s defenseman Aaron Ward a memorable cheap shot fist to the head.  Well, I can go on about Bruins heartbreaks, but hey, let’s stay positive here.

Last year they put all those demons aside.  They beat the rival Montreal Canadiens in dramatic fashion, smoked the Flyers right out of the playoffs and overcame all odds and won the Cup, right?  The point is that this Bruins team can overcome certain adversities.  Most of the players have remained from last year.  One would like to think they can pull together to get out of this.

When asked about the recent problems, goalie Tim Thomas said, “It can be at the beginning, towards the end – it’s the nature of the game.  If we could play as well as we did in November and December, the whole year long, well that would be great but that’s not reality for any team.”

After an embarrassing 6-0 loss to the Buffalo Sabres on Wednesday night, Bruins coach Claude Julien held a physically demanding practice on Thursday, focusing on 1-on-1 battles.

“It was a get-back-to-work type practice,” said defenseman Adam McQuaid. “It’s been a little while since we’ve had a practice like that.”

The Bruins have had a history of struggles, only to get out of it.  In fact, this very week last year, the Bruins were in the midst of a 1-4-0 streak, only to win their next 7 games, including sweeping a six game road trip.

And wait, let me just check my….. oh, would you look at that?  The Bruins just happen to be going on a six game road trip next week.

So can the Bruins get out of their funk?  I’d say yes.  They are still healthy and the quality goaltending should come back around.  The veteran leadership should help, plus last year’s experiences.  The question is….. when?
