From The Bear and the Gang video

Lately, it seems like the Boston Bruins are trying to have a little more fun and engage their fan base on social media more than usual. The recent give-a-player-Instagram-for-a-day initiative is a good example of that and now the team is having even more fun with The Bear and the Gang. Basically it’s a parody of cloying 1980s sitcoms, but even funnier because it’s just so goofy. Watch the intro here.

In the starring role is The Bear (not to be confused with Blades), who was kind of in–pardon the pun–hibernation since we last saw him crafting his own Stanley Cup out of tinfoil, cardboard and a colander. He lives in a sort of basement den decorated with all sorts of Bruins gear and is surrounded by a crew of goofballs.

Brad Marchand makes an appearance playing paper-scissors-rock with Jack Edwards, who later seems annoyed at The Bear’s monopolization of a giant remote control. Rene Rancourt does his classic fist-pump and admires his Stanley Cup ring. Tyler Seguin is shown building a pyramid of cards. Shawn Thornton ties a headband around his head, reminiscent of The Karate Kid. Andrew Ference, dressed in a lab coat and safety goggles, attends to a baking soda volcano. Tuukka Rask, wearing excellent sunglasses, and Dennis Seidenberg play a little duet on the saxophone (for Rask) and the accordion (for Seidenberg). The Bear accidentally shrinks Zdeno Chara‘s jersey down to kid-size. Adam McQuaid blow-dries his hair–which he will soon lose to a razor at Cuts for a Cause. David Krejci does the classic ‘turn to camera’ look parodied in Anchorman. Patrice Bergeron plays the hand-slapping game with The Bear. Johnny Boychuk would probably play the part of the handsome 80s heartthrob with the look he’s giving. Cam Neely even makes an appearance at his team president’s desk. Claude Julien, who appears to be in full flight protesting a call, is “Coach.”

Those descriptions sound funny, huh? It’s even better on video.

Right now, episode one of The Bear and the Gang is only available on the Bruins’ mobile app, although I’ve heard the episodes will also be posted online at some point in the future for the benefit of fans (like me) who do not have a smartphone. So, stay tuned for that and for more installments of The Bear and the Gang!
