1976: Gilles Gilbert and the Boston Bruins shut out the Los Angeles Kings 3-0 in quarterfinal action.

1989: Colby Cohen is born in Villanova, Pennsylvania. He started out, after juniors, in the US National Team Development Program but left to join the Lincoln Stars for a season. In that one season, he led all USHL defensemen in scoring with 60 points. He was drafted by the Colorado Avalanche in 2007 but had already committed to Boston University, so he became a Terrier. In his sophomore year, BU went all the way to the Frozen Four. Cohen scored the overtime game-winning goal to defeat the Miami Redhawks 4-3 and win the championship. After his junior year, he went pro with the Avalanche, going down to their AHL-level club in Lake Erie. But, he became part of the Bruins after a trade in November 2010 and joined the Providence Bruins. He went along on the Boston Bruins’ playoff run as a spare, but didn’t qualify for name engraving on the Stanley Cup, though the team did give him a ring and he’s in the official picture. He played in 58 games for Providence this season.

1991: Cam Neely gets a hat trick against the Montreal Canadiens and Boston wins the game 4-1. He scores two of those goals in the span of 11 seconds during the third period, the fastest two goals by one player in Boston Bruins history. That’s his second hat trick of a single postseason, tying Phil Esposito‘s record.

1992: The Bruins defeat the Buffalo Sabres 5-4 in overtime when Ted Donato ends it after 2:08.

A year ago today: It’s practice time at TD Garden before the next showdown with the Habs.
