ESPN’s David Aldridge says that the Boston Celtics are looking hard at free agent center Tyson Chandler. Danny Ainge can look hard at Chandler all he wants, but the fact remains that the Celtics have zero shot at the free agent prize. I have a better chance of becoming a millionaire from winning the lottery that I do not play then Ainge has of landing Chandler.
Chandler is coming off a deal that had him make 8 million before he averaged nearly a double double, played game changing defense, and helped Dallas win an NBA title for their first time. Chandler is in line for a very healthy raise on a long term deal. Teams like Dallas and a host of others with enough cap space to give Chandler the contract that he deserves will be calling for his services. The Celtics have zero cap space available other than the mid level exception and veteran minimum deals. I apologize if I do not believe that Chandler will take a pay cut and make less then he made last year to come to Boston.
As far as a sign and trade, I am just not seeing it. The Celtics just do not have the pieces to pull off that deal. The Mavericks do not want Jeff Green for Tyson Chandler. The Celtics would then also have a hole on the offensive end off the bench to fill. The Mavericks are even less likely to deal for Glen Davis. Trading your unsung hero during a title run for an over weight head case off the bench is not a way to keep your fan base happy. The Mavericks might take Rajon Rondo, but then who is the starting point guard for Boston for both the present and the future? This again creates a large hole that Boston must fill by making that deal to fill the hole at center.
I will admit the thought of the defensive presence of Chandler next to KG is a very nice dream. I also love the idea of Rondo hitting Chandler in the paint for easy scores. This would be like having a better Kendrick Perkins in the Kendrick Perkins role of 08. However, Chandler in green is just like my dreams of millions, a pipe dream. Ainge can dream all he wants, but the reality is that he better be spending his time on plan B at center. Remember Go Green or Go Home!!!!!!!!!
