The bad news for the Boston Celtics is Brandon Bass is out injured for about seven to as many as fourteen days with inflammation in the knee that he banged up against the Knicks on February 3rd. This type of injury would normally cripple a team for a little while. Bass has been the Celtics top performer off the bench. He has given them a guy that can hit the open fifteen foot jump shot and get into the paint and score. Bass also has played solid help defense.

His loss is big, but not as big as it could be and that brings us to the good news. The great news is that rookie JaJuan Johnson can give Boston a lot of what Brandon Bass gives the team.

Johnson’s skill set was on full display against the Bulls on Sunday. Johnson on the offensive end was more than solid. After missing some shots early, Johnson settled down nicely to finish with 12 points on 6-13 shooting. He would bury the open fifteen foot jump shot like Bass has all season. The Bulls dared him to shoot as they doubled Paul Pierce and Ray Allen. Johnson showed zero lack of confidence as he calmly buried his shots. Johnson also had some solid moves in the paint as he hit the paint hard and got a couple solid baskets in the paint despite the Bulls swarming him with defensive stud Joakim Noah. He also ran the floor well and had a monster dunk off an all oop feed in transition from one Rajon Rondo.

The defensive end was just as solid. He kept competing despite getting hosed with awful rookie calls that got the Bulls free throws. Instead of getting whistle shy, Johnson continued to remain active and aggressive. He help defend and drew an offensive charge call on Carlos Boozer with great positioning. Johnson also had a solid block in the paint due to great rotating to the ball. His positioning was solid as he would jump in front of the pass a couple of times for the steal.

Johnson has clearly been prepping for a moment that he could show that he could shine. He still is a rookie with a lot to learn, but his athleticism, skill set, and basketball IQ are undeniable after his latest performance against a very good team. Johnson just needs the chance. In fact Johnson has produced in the three games that he has received at least ten minutes by scoring in double digits in every one of those games. The fact is he has his chance now and that is good news in Boston. Remember Go Green Or Go Home!!!!!!
