The Boston Celtics are a team right now that has serious issues. The Celtics are terrible at rebounding, struggling to score, and have been beset with a ton of injuries. They are a veteran team that looks old at times and play with a complete lack of sustained energy. The team clearly looks like it needs a face lift in order to become a true championship contender again. However, this does not mean Danny Ainge should make a single change at the trade deadline.

I am not saying that Ainge should not explore all the options out there, but the reality is that he should stand pat and ride this season out. Trading any of the core “Big Three” or Rondo makes zero sense. Ainge must know this and that is why no deal has even been rumored for the likes of Ray Allen, Paul Pierce, or Kevin Garnett.

The team will be blown up, just not during the season. The team at the end of the year will be able to blow this team up and remake it into a true contender. They only have a few deals inlace and a ton of cap room. If Ainge foolishly makes a deal, then he will have to take on the money of the contract that he is dealing. This means the hard to come by cap flexibility that Ainge worked so hard to have at seasons end to be able to sign a couple max contract guys will be lost.

The fact is only contenders want the veteran piece that Boston has to offer. The fact is no real contender is under the salary cap to absorb the contracts of guys like KG or Pierce. These teams spend money and that is why they are contenders. These contenders also do not really have the young pieces with serious upside that Boston would want. This means finding a partner for these guys would be lot tougher then people think.

Even deals like KG and a few contracts for Josh Smith or Pierce to Memphis for Rudy Gay do not make much sense. Smith’s contract is not a great one and it hurts the cap flexibility for next year. Gay is a nice younger scorer, but do you really like him for a max contract for multiple years?

These are the facts that Ainge must be seeing. This is why he has said that he does not expect to make a deal. The bottom line is Ainge needs to ride this miserable year out. Maybe the team gets healthy, rectifies some problems and goes on one more run. They are a very talented group on paper and it would not surprise me if they did put it together like they did in 2010. However, even if they do not they have the beauty of cap flexibility on the horizon and can fix these problems and reload this team. Remember Go Green Or Go Home!!!!!!!
