During a recent interview with new Boston Celtics spark plug off the bench Jason Terry, Terry was asked about his feelings on playing with Boston Celtics point guard Rajon Rondo. Terry was obviously extremely complimentary with the man that is trusted with getting him the ball so he can perform his scoring exploits that have made him one of the top six men in the NBA. The revealing part of the story was Terry would share a conversation he had with former teammate Jason Kidd during a game against Boston last season. Kidd and Terry were sitting on the bench marveling at another ridiculous Rondo like performance. Kidd made it clear to Terry that Rondo was the best point guard in the league right now. Kidd claimed no one controlled the game at both ends of the floor like Rondo. The running the offense is a huge part of Rondo’s game, but people do not realize that he can play some serious defense with his speed and long arms. Jason Kidd knows a little something about being a great point guard in this league. Kidd at one time was clearly the best the NBA had and his skills are still solid enough after all these years that he has earned another job in what will be his nineteenth NBA season next year with New York. Thus these comments speak volumes about how good Rondo has become.

The Jason Kidd type story is not a one time tale regarding Rondo. The fact is these stories of Rondo being the best point guard from other players are becoming more and more frequent as time goes on. A season ago it was Kevin Durant professing a desire to play with Rondo because of his slick passing ability. Dwight Howard also made it clear that playing with Rondo would be a great experience for the big man looking for easy hoops in the paint. Then again who would not want to play with the NBA’s leading passer except for Judas…oops Ray Allen. LeBron James and Dwayne Wade have always made it clear that Rondo is a special player that can beat you in so many ways. The respect from his peers continues to grow.

The coaching community is also aware of Rondo. Opposing coaches from Phil Jackson to Eric Spoelstra have long made it clear Rondo is the key to the Boston offense and must be stopped or at least contained in order to secure a win over Boston. People think using Kobe Bryant or LeBron to cover Rondo is something done just because of Rondo’s bad jump shot allows them to hang back and free roam. This is not entirely the case. These teams are also trying to give Rondo a different defensive look to try to slow him down.

The fact is Rondo does have faults, but a point guard’s job is to run the offense. A true point guard’s greatness is not measured in points scored off jump shots or at the free throw line, but rather executing the offense and leading his team to victory. Running an offense means setting the plays, getting your teammates involved, and making the right calls of plays on the court at the right times to ensure success. Looking at Boston’s winning record in the regular season and post season with Rondo at the starting helm and his assist totals, Rondo may very well be the best true point guard in the NBA. Other guys like Derrick Rose and Russell Westbrook may score, but they do not run the offense like Rondo.

The bottom line is Rajon Rondo has made it clear to anyone that will listen to him that he believes that he is the best point guard in the world. As time is marching forward and his exploits leave their mark on the NBA, more and more people are believing this statement. By the time his career winds down perhaps Rondo will silence all doubters of this statement. If the current trend continues then count on that happening sooner than later.
