NBA Rumors: Boston Celtics’ Doc Rivers A Favorite For Olympic Head Coaching Job
NBA Rumors have an Olympic tone this week. After a very successful run as the USA men’s basketball head coach, Duke legend Mike Krzyzewski (Coach K) has decided to call it quits following this year’s gold medal finish. The NBA rumors already have the favorite for his replacement. The rumored favorite is Boston Celtics head coach Doc Rivers.
This bit of information should come as no surprise as Rivers is one of the most respected and well thought of coaches in the entire NBA. In many ways Rivers would be the right man for the job as evident by his recent coaching achievements. The fact is no one gets more out of his roster than Doc as Boston routinely winds up as a contender for the NBA title despite seriously flawed rosters. This means he would have zero trouble leading a star studded lineup to a gold medal by getting the most out of his players. The man can also handle egos as evidence by the seamless handling of the “Big Three” from the beginning. This means Doc has the ability to manage hall of fame talent and their egos and that is huge for an Olympic coach.
Rivers has said he is not interested in the USA job because he wants another NBA title and knows that will require his total focus. However, the fact is he went to the Olympics as an analyst. This tells me that he is keeping his eyes on the Olympic team. He could have just relaxed at home or been involved with Celtics related business, but he chose to go to the Olympics and watch this team win gold. this tells me that despite what he has said, that Doc would consider the offer and take it.
