The Boston Red Sox must be starting to feel like that lovable, geeky friend you find in virtually every high school angst comedy- the one who is always there for the pretty girl but who nevertheless winds up taking his sister or his mother to the prom and still, somehow, ends up going home alone. After pursuing Roy Oswalt- this year’s value pick prom queen- all off-season, the team expected an answer today. Even though that answer would have been almost certainly been no, Boston fans would at least get to stop reading about how little Roy Oswalt wants to play in front of them. Instead, the latest from MLB trade rumors, states that Oswalt is now considering signing with a team mid-season. That’s right Sox fans, you are in for five more months of Roy Oswalt telling you that your sweet for asking, but he’d rather die than be seen on a date with you (wait, what?)

In recent weeks, the teams vying for Oswalt’s services have been dropping like Robert Andino bloopers and only the Red Sox, Rangers, and Cardinals are still in the mix, according to most experts. Boston is only team of those three who does not already have a finalized five man rotation and would not need to make room for the righty by trading another hurler. Even so, Oswalt seems to prefer watching daytime television this spring rather than take a guaranteed role with the Red Sox. This leaves Boston with a myriad of potential starters, but no clear front runners for the back of the rotation.

With so many of their starting pitcher options coming from players on minor league contracts and sporting sizable injury histories, Oswalt might find that the Red Sox are still waiting out in the rain for him mid-season, boom box held aloft, Peter Gabriel crooning away. Both Texas and St. Louishave options beyond their slated fifth starter and their interest has been little more than casual to this point. If Oswalt is unwilling to pitch Boston, he may end up in de facto retirement. Surprisingly, he seems just fine with that. As a Red Sox fan, that hurts.
