Phil Hughes lost a no-hit bid last night with no outs in the 8th inning. He ended up with 7.1 IP, 10 SO, ER, 1 H after Joba Chamberlain allowed one of Hughes’ runners to come home via a single in relief. This is only Hughes’ second start of the season after winning the fifth starting spot just as spring training was ending.
Hughes has never thrown a no-hitter in his career, but in his first Major League start in 2007 he threw 8.0 no-hit innings before straining his hamstring with no outs in the ninth inning. He was removed from the game and went to the 60-day DL. He spent 2009 in the bullpen where he was dominant, and helped the Yankees win a 27th World Championship. For a guy as young as this, these are some impressive outings.
The Yankees have started the season with a force. They play a third game today against Oakland at 3:35pm Eastern. They have already secured their fifth straight series win to start the season and hold an 11-3 first place record. They will start a series with Anaheim on Friday.
