Did the Rangers Bid On Yu Darvish Just to Block Toronto?

I admit it. I was very surprised to hear the Texas Rangers had won the bid for Yu Darvish. Why? They had CJ Wilson around for 6 years 75 million, and moving Feliz to the Rotation and signing Joe Nathan makes them just as good.

With reports surfacing that the Rangers and Darvish aren’t very close to an agreement, makes me wonder. You see, I like baseball conspiracy theory- so all I ask is that you (as a reader) keep an open mind with what I’m going to say. What I’m going to say isn’t fact- it’s opinion. The question I’m going to pose is simply- is it possible?

Did the Texas Rangers submit the biggest bid, knowing they wouldn’t be able to sign Yu Darvish to CJ Wilson money AFTER paying the 54 million dollar fee (120 million total). Did they bid just to block it’s rivals from getting Davrish? Is it possible? Again- not fact…is. it. Possible.

Why do I ask? Well- again. Why let CJ Wilson go knowing what you’d get from him- just to spend an extra 50 million on well- a hyped pitcher that hasn’t faced the best hitters in the world yet. The Rangers are deep in pitching. They didn’t need Yu Darvish. If they really believed in Neftali Feliz, wouldn’t they just move him to the rotation with Wilson and say yup- we have the ace now. Why risk all this money on an enigma? How can you bid 54 million dollars just to talk to him, and expect to sign him for less than what you bid just to talk to him? That doesn’t make sense to me. It isn’t adding up.

The Rangers knew that the Blue Jays were going to win the bid if they didn’t do something drastic. If they Jays won the bid, they would be a very strong contending team. With the Angels going nuts this offseason, it’s no guarantee the Rangers even get to October if the Jays land Yu Darvish. Not with the Red Sox, Angels, Yankees, and Rays all in play. So is it possible this is a blocking move? So that a competitor can’t get stronger?

The posting system is broken, and frankly if Texas didn’t sign Yu Darvish- it’s because they knew they couldn’t. “If we can’t have him, no one can.” Heck- a team could have put in a ridiculous 100 million dollar bid and not even try and sign him if they wanted.

Again- is it possible?
