BREAKING: Detroit Tigers Sign 1B Prince Fielder to Nine-Year, $214 Million Deal
Howard Smith - US PRESSWIRE

The Detroit Tigers are the mystery team who have been going after Prince Fielder. It is reported by Jon Heyman of CBS that they have signed Fielder to a nine-year deal worth $214 million.

He will play first base, meaning that Miguel Cabrera will have to switch his position.

The deal is the fourth largest contract in the history of professional sports. The three largest were all in baseball: A-Rod with the Yankees in 2008, Pujols with the Angels this offseason, and A-Rod with the Rangers in 2001.

Fielder, 27, has hit 230 home runs, driven in 656, and batted .282 during his seven seasons in the major leagues. He is widely regarded as one of the top power hitters in the game today.

Fielder has been selected to the All-Star Game three times and has finished in the top four in the MVP voting three times.

He will look to help keep the Tigers in playoff contention in 2012. Last season, the Tigers won 95 games and the AL Central title. They defeated the Yankees in the ALDS but lost in six games to the Texas Rangers in the ALCS.

Prince’s father, Cecil, also played for the Tigers. He hit 51 home runs in 1990 and 44 in 1991, finishing second in the American League MVP voting both seasons.
