Former College Football Quarterback Mitch Mustain Signs With White Sox
Mitch Mustain’s college football production never seemed to equal the number of stories written about him. So why not give baseball a try?
Mustain, the former Arkansas and Southern Cal quarterback, signed a minor league deal with the Chicago White Sox after impressing them with his velocity.
Blessed with a pseudo-cannon attached to the right side of his body, eight years away from the diamond hasn’t stopped him from being able to hum a baseball at 90 mph.
He’ll work out with the White Sox farm system this spring to see if there’s enough salvageable talent and if not, the Arena League beckons.
At 23, he’s a little old to be considered anything more than a longshot but he’s also a guy that I thought received a bad wrap.
Mustain led the Razorbacks to an 8-0 record in 2006 in the games he started (of course, it helps to have Darren McFadden and Felix Jones in the backfield) before offensive coordinator and his high school coach Gus Malzahn left Fayetteville.
His relationship with Houston Nutt soured and he ultimately transferred to USC.
Never able to best Mark Sanchez or Matt Barkley, Mustain fell through the cracks, a steep drop for a former all-world prep quarterback.
The setbacks haven’t sapped his competitive will though as Mustain notes:
“I’m going to play one sport or the other until somebody tells me to go home,” he said, according to 5News, “until they’re not even going to let me try. So I’m going to go do it and literally throw everything I have at it and see where it goes.”
There aren’t many guarantees in the life of a professional athlete but one is that as long as you can throw a baseball as hard as Mustain can, some scout will figure it’s worth a look.
If he’s got a curve in his back pocket somewhere, all the better.
