Report: Joba Chamberlain Dislocated Ankle Playing On Trampoline With Son

Updated: Joba Chamberlain underwent surgery on his right ankle last evening, and reports are now suggesting he could in fact miss the entire 2012 season.

Reports have surfaced New York Yankees pitcher Joba Chamberlain will miss a yet-to-be-determined amount of time after dislocating his right ankle while playing on a trampoline with his son yesterday afternoon.

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman described the injury as an “open dislocation” which will require several days of hospital time for Chamberlain and potential surgery. While the injury isn’t believed to be career-threatening at this point, with Chamberlain’s recent injury history it could be more damaging than we are being led to believe.

After a Tommy John procedure on his throwing elbow in June 2011, Chamberlain had just healed well enough to throw his first few bullpen sessions toward the end of last month, renewing hope in the organization the powerful right-hander would be back to the form that made him one of the American League’s rising stars in the early 2000s.

Chamberlain appeared in only 27 games in 2011, posting a 2.83 ERA, and 1.05 WHIP while striking out 24 and walking seven.

On that note, what is it with professional baseball players and their wacky, off-field injuries?

These guys are starting to come off more like the Keystone Cops than the well-trained, conditioned athletes they appear on the surface.

Chamberlain’s injury is just the latest in a series of odd, self-inflicted injuries for Major Leaguers during the off-season and early-going in the Grapefruit and Cactus leagues.

Tampa Bay Rays ace David Price recently injured his neck by wiping himself off to vigorously with a towel. This wouldn’t seem so strange if it was the only time it had happened. According to Rays beat writer, Roger Mooney, it has happened on several occasions.

Chamberlain’s injury is almost as bad as Adam Eaton’s self-stabbing while trying to open a DVD case, but I digress.

The moral of the story is that these guys should really be more careful.

Hopefully for Yankees fans, Joba Chamberlain’s injury doesn’t require him to miss any significant time during the 2012 MLB campaign, but early reports suggest it could be a very serious injury.
