Washington Nationals John Lannan Emails Media Saying He Requested A Trade
Brad Mills-US PRESSWIRE

The Washington Nationals made a historic demotion early in the week when they sent left-handed pitcher John Lannan down to Triple-A Syracuse instead of bringing them along for the start of the season after Lannan was the Opening Day starter for the 2009 and 2010 season.

Wednesday, Lannan wrote an email to members of the media saying that he has told General Manager Mike Rizzo that he wants a trade. In the email, Lannan said, “’’I believe that I belong in a big league rotation.”

Lannan has a $5 million salary that he is carrying with him to Syracuse. He was beaten out for the fifth spot in the rotation by Ross Detwiler who had a 1-1 record with a 3.06 ERA in seven games. He also struck out 18 batters which was only second to Gio Gonzalez on the team who struck out 24 batters during the exhibition games. Detwiler also held opponents to a .206 batting average.

Compared to Detwiler, Lannan has a worse Spring Training. Lannan had a record of 1-1 and recorded a 5.14 ERA in six games, four of which were starts. Lannan held opponents to .289 batting average, that is almost three hits out of every 10 at-bats.

Rizzo told reporters before Thursday’s opener against the Chicago Cubs that the team has no intentions on trading Lannan.

Last month, there were multiple teams interested in Lannan but Rizzo turned down any trade and Lannan will just be around for reassurance if needed.
