Toronto Blue Jays: A Fan Collapses and Later Dies During Game Against Chicago White Sox
There is an adage in baseball that you never know what you are going to see when you go to ballpark. Most of the time, that is used in a positive light, hoping you will see a no-hitter, a four homer game, or an unassisted triple play. But in the seventh inning of the Chicago White Sox – Toronto Blue Jays game, we saw something that is extremely bizarre and heartbreaking.
An elderly man, who was reportedly with his grandson from other fans accounts, collapsed in his seat. The White Sox third baseman, Kevin Youkilis, got a hold of third base umpire, Mark Wegner, to stop play. Confused at the situation, I was originally upset because Jesse Crain was going to get cold during a tight situation. Within seconds, however, I realized the situation was a lot scarier than the jam Jesse Crain was in.
Fans looked on as the EMTs attempted to revive the man, performing CPR on a truck down the third base line. Apparently, the Jays’ broadcast went to commercial, so no one from Canada really knew what was going on. However, the White Sox broadcast – the one I was watching – did not. I watched the horrific event as it was happening, seeing the EMTs leave the park slowly as a paramedic was pushing on the man’s chest. Throughout the game, no one knew if the man was going to make it. But now we know his unfortunate fate, as he passed away according to CityNews in Toronto.
