Not even a week ago, the Brooklyn Nets made another free agency move agreeing to a deal with former Sacramento Kings forward Donte Greene to a contract. The contract was not a guaranteed deal as he would have to fight his way in training camp to be given a roster spot. Wednesday, it was learned that Greene’s deal is now on hold.
Greene will be undergoing surgery on his ankle as his agent said that he has some type of fracture. Greene injured his ankle last Saturday when he was working out in Charlotte. As of this moment it is unclear as to whether or not Greene will be a Net after all. His injury puts a damper on any type of possible contract that he could have gotten.
Greene spent four seasons with the Kings from 2008-2012. He averaged 6.1 points, 2.4 rebounds and 0.7 assists per game in 253 games he played for the Kings. Greene was mostly a bench player last year. He played in 53 games and started only seven.
With the Nets team looking the way it is, he would have to battle Jerry Stackhouse, Keith Bogans and some of the rookies that the Nets have to be guaranteed a spot on the roster. Even that is an uphill climb for a young veteran player like Greene.
Greene could have been added depth at the forward position for the Nets but now, with his injury, it looks like Greene will end up being a free agent again before the season begins.
Before agreeing to the deal, Greene was also being pursued by the Chicago Bulls, Indiana Pacers and New York Knicks.
