New Hurricanes Usage of Twitter
Carolina Hurricanes are becoming active on Twitter
Hockey appears to be the next sport in line to take on Twitter. Hopefully this league wont fall victims of the high-tech program.
Football and basketball players in the pro leagues and college have already jumped on the new social media wave as a way to connect with their friends, family and fans. Sometimes, tweets can be very dangerous for athletes because the web has its way to expose secrets and get people in trouble.
Though there have been some current issues associated with Twitter in the triangle (like UNC football and former Duke guard Kyrie Irving’s ongoing harassment case with Miss Hawaii), the Carolina Hurricanes are encouraging players to be a part of their growing Twitter family.
Though none of the super stars like Ward, Staal, Skinner, Jokinen, or Pitkanen have Twitter accounts, many of the role players and AHL up-and-comers actively update their profiles. The Hurricanes signed former Atlanta forward Anthony Stewart to a two year contract worth $900 thousand in 2011-12 and $1 million the following season.
It didn’t take Stewart long to change his heart and join forces with the enemy. He wasted no time asking questions on Twitter about his soon-to-be new home.
This 26-year-old Canadian is quite the jokester and I guess he has to get used to change considering he played for three teams in the Southeast division – the Florida Panthers, Atlanta Thrashers and now the Carolina Hurricanes.
“#QuestionsaboutNC Are there hurricanes there? Didn’t see any panthers on the sawgrass or killer birds in Atlantic station,” Stewart (@Astew22) tweeted one day after signing his contract with Carolina.
Stewart joked about North Carolina song artists Petey Pablo and J. Cole and he had to ask silly questions like how far is it to Myrtle Beach, what is the Hurricanes mascot and what kinds of food Caniacs eat at the tailgate parties. Mr. Comedian is at least excited to learn more about his new team and the surrounding area. His curiosity about Carolina can hopefully translate well to the rink. He has a bright road ahead of him and could see time on the top two lines if he continues to blossom.
Third round pick Keegan Lowe (@Klowe4) in this years draft tweeted, “Extremely excited! Happy to be part of such a great franchise #carolinahurricanes. Thanks for all the support caneiacs.” I guess we need to teach Lowe a thing or two about Carolina so he knows how to properly spell “Caniac.” No big deal. That will come with time.
His future teammate and 11th overall selection Ryan Murphy also gave a shout out to the Caniacs.
“Thank you to all the caniac fans for welcoming me through twitter!!,” @ryanmurphy24 posted. And when he visited Carolina this past weekend, he didn’t want to leave. “Wishing (that my) flight gets cancelled on the way home from Raleigh. One more day to vacation could never hurt.”
These young guys are starting a new trend in the locker room before even stepping foot in it. Defenseman Jamie McBain joined Twitter on July 2 and he already has more than 1,600 followers. That’s the appreciation we love to see from the faithful Caniacs.
These new additions are definitely grateful to have an opportunity to play for the Hurricanes and they have used Twitter in a successful manner. They are still young adults having fun but they still manage to keep it professional.
Thank you. Thank you guys for giving the Carolina Hurricanes a good reputation on Twitter. We don’t need any more North Carolina athletes getting involved in online issues.
