The Carolina Hurricanes released its camp roster and schedule for the 2011 training camp that opens up in Raleigh. We are just weeks away from the start of the season and the Hurricanes have 55 roster invitees that break down to three teams, six goaltenders, 19 defensemen, and 31 forwards.

The top lines are pretty much settled, but the question is how the last two lines will shape out and who will be the extra skaters to fill out the roster. Thirteen prospects joined the rest of the team North Carolina after participating in the NHL Prospect Tournament in Michigan, including forwards Jared Staal, Victor Rask, Brody Sutter and defensemen Justin Faulk, Austin Levi, Ryan Murphy, Rasmus Rissanen, and Keegan Lowe.

With all the newcomers to camp this year, the Hurricanes have their work cut out as the coaching staff needs to trim the roster down for the start of the regular season. Camp oficially opens with player physicals on September 16 and on-ice practice will commence the following morning. The teams first game will be on Monday, September 9 against the Buffalo Sabres.

Non-prospect invitees that every Caniac should be excited to see are Tomas Kaberle (#51) and Anthony Stewart (#13) who will play crucial rolls in the Hurricanes’ playoff push this season. Rather than list off 20 more names, let me say this. The NHL roster is certainly not set in stone and there are a lot of players who can step up from the AHL and prospect ranks and start every day. So keep an eye out (this year particularly) in players you don’t know because in a few years, the makeup of this Carolina team will be completely different.

The camp concludes in early October when they take on the Eastern Conference finalist Tampa Bay Lightning.
