Report: Jimmy Clausen will start for Panthers on Sunday against Bengals

According to ESPN NFC South blogger Pat Yasinskas, the Carolina Panthers have announced rookie quarterback Jimmy Clausen will start his first career game at quarterback against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday. He replaces Matt Moore—who has struggled as a starter the first two games and was even knocked out with a concussion in Week 1 against the New York Giants.
Over the first two games, Moore has completed just 21 of 49 passes for 307 yards with two touchdowns and four interceptions. Moore was replaced by Clausen in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after he struggled all afternoon to get anything consistent going on offense. Whether the reason for his disappointing performance had anything to do with last weekend’s concussion or not, the fact is Moore has not lived up to the expectations of the Panthers so far in 2010. He finished last season on a strong note, leading Carolina to a 4-1 record to end the year, but has looked ineffective enough where the team is willing to give Clausen a shot as the starter.
Clausen finished Sunday’s game against the Bucs completing 7 of 13 passes for 59 yards with one interception and almost helped the Panthers make it a one-possession game during a late fourth-quarter rally.
While he should be excited about earning this early—and unexpected—start as a rookie, Clausen could be in for a long afternoon as he faces Mike Zimmer’s talented defense. On Sunday, the Bengals had their way with Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco, forcing him to throw a career high four interceptions. Cincinnati knows the situation in Carolina and will do everything they can to apply pressure on Clausen all game—which means the former Notre Dame standout could be in for a long afternoon.
