Panther’s head coach Ron Rivera was at the Under Armor Senior Bowl practices earlier on Tuesday, and so were all the Carolina Panthers scouting staff. They have scouted these players all year and the scouts will watch practice all week and look forward to the game; they hope to get a sense of who they want with their 8th/9h pick, and also look to fill out the later rounds as well.

They are a hard-working group of scouts that love what they do. “We are our own little culture, just like the coaching fraternity,” Panthers’ scout Ryan Cowden said. “We’ve got a good group, guys that care about it, that don’t just do it because it’s a job. Our guys do a great job. They care and they work hard.” It is a hard job they do too; most of these scouts are on the road almost half the year. It’s also a job that reminds Cowden of a curious Holiday.

“Here in Mobile, it’s a little bit like ‘Groundhog Day’,” said Cowden, “You get a chance to see the players live, which gives you a chance to affirm or question what you’ve seen on tape.” It’s an exciting time for both the scouts and the athletes, because the athletes are auditioning for jobs and the scouts are looking for people to do those jobs. Melvin Ingram tweeted after practice Tuesday, “Bout to get some rest… Thanking god for the opportunity to get the chance to compete with some of the best in college football…” It appears it will be a productive week for many players as well as scouts.

You might think this elite group is looking to bolster their defensive unit since their offense was ranked 7th in the NFL, but they are not ruling out taking a playmaker if he’s the best player on the board. Carolina fans might be hopeful that they go after a familiar Carolina product like South Carolina’s DT Melvin Ingram or North Carolina’s Quinton Coples, and the scouts are sure to have their eye on both of them. Increasing their pass pressure on defense is priority number one, and their draft picks should reflect that.

The team knows it needs to address the defense, but Rivera probably he it has already taken preliminary steps with the addition of defensive backs coach Steve Wilks who had great success with Rivera on the Chargers in 2010 when the Chargers led the league in total defense and pass defense.

There might be a way to address defense and also give Cam Newton one or two more weapons to use. The Panthers seemed determined after their season-ending loss to the Saints to follow the Saints example to get back to the playoffs.“We’re passionate about it, and we want to get results for the Panthers,” Cowden said. “It’s a little bit behind the scenes, but our job is to deliver the prospects that can make us a winning football team.” Hopefully, they can find them in Mobile, Alabama.
