Let’s all take a step back for a moment and move to a more realistic state of mind. I’m not going meathead fan on you here, but I’m thinking about this season and the window of opportunity that’s closing for the Chicago Bears. Considering the age of some of this team’s superstars, it may be a LONG TIME before this team gets this close again. There’s no time like the present to win, and the Bears defense and special teams are proving to be championship quality. The offense finally started doing its part until Jay Cutler broke his thumb. Now we’re hearing he may or may not be back before the regular season. Even if he is able to come back, there’s no guarantee that he’ll be sharp. Plus, with the Bears propensity to lie about injuries, who knows how serious Cutler’s thumb may in fact be?

With all the above being said, perhaps bringing in Brett Favre may not be the worst idea in the world. Caleb Hanie will need to be the starter for the next few weeks anyway, so perhaps Favre can take a few weeks and learn about the players and system plus get into game shape. If Cutler comes back, it only cost the Bears money. But if our worst nightmares come true and Cutler doesn’t play, you have a very experienced insurance policy with a chip on his shoulder. Assuming that Favre is 70-80% of where he used to be, that has to be better than Hanie. However, I have a feeling that Favre will find a way to be a bit better than that…

While I know many of us will always hate Favre, I love the Chicago Bears more and want to see them win another Super Bowl in my lifetime. There’s plenty of veterans on this team that feel the same exact way. As far as I’m concerned, at best Hanie is a backup quarterback. Favre is a Hall of Fame quarterback with something to prove to his former employers. Wouldn’t it be something if he led the Bears past Green Bay and onto the Super Bowl?

I reported earlier Favre’s agent (as well as Cutler’s) Bus Cook has contacted the Bears and has suggested that Favre isn’t an option. But I am sure for money and some pleading Favre may do it.

I’m sure many of you will have strong opinions on this topic. I welcome your thoughts at ChicagoBearJew.

13 Rants to “The Brett Favre Scenario”

  1. Andrew J says:

If i heard the bears sign Brett Favre i would probably barf (or is it bafr). I know Hanie hasnt proven much yet but its clear hes a tough son of a gun from the NFC championship game, and that was after he probably got no snaps with the first team offense in practice the week before. Hanie is more mobile than cutler so the changes martz has made recently, incorporating more bootlegs and moving pockets, i think would benefit his style of play. We could probably use a veteran backup for just in case, but Hanie hasn’t done anything to prove hes not capable of winning games for us. As long as Martz keeps this offense simple and has forte and barber carry the ball 30-35 times a game, and has Hanie manage the game weve got a good chance. I liked what I saw Hanie do against Green Bay, lets see what he can do with a week of practice and against teams that aren’t the best in the NFL.

    • Chicago Bear Jew says:

Andrew I was at training camp and have major concerns about Hanie’s arm strength. He can move all he wants, but he needs to throw passes and I’m not sure he can do it.

      • Andrew J says:

I’ve never seen him in training camp or anything but Mel Kiper said Hanie had arm strength comparable to Joe Flacco in 2008 and I cant imagine that would diminish in a few years, but rather improve if anything. Hanie was good against the Packers considering the situation he was thrown into. The Bears should sign some backup veteran to play if hanie also goes down and it shouldnt be Favre. Favre wasnt very good last year, and would just provide an distraction to a team that doesn’t need any more than it has already. It’s Hanie’s offense until he loses it, gets injured, or Cutler comes back. I believe Hanie will be the best qb on the field against 4 out of the 6 remaining teams we play, only rodgers and palmer are definitively better than him and maybe Ponder. If we were just on the bubble to get into the playoffs, maybe we take a chance on starting a vet, but for this year we should just stay the course with what we’ve got. If Hanie was able to win over Martz, who seemed to absolutely hate him for no reason, he has won over me.

one issue, favre absolutely sucks at football. why do people drudge ridiculous ideas like this up? did you not watch favre play last year? i feel bad for the server that stored this pile of crap.

  3. enigma4444 says:

I like the Farve idea. Why not! Sure I didn’t like him either when he
played for teams against us. But just imagine going to Green Bay
Christmas Day with number 4 in Bears colors. The psych out alone
could win the game. Lovie has already said he wants a veteran QB
to “backup” Hanie. And we sure as hell don’t wan’t a useless one like
Collins of last year. Go for someone that is going to actually help
us win. And let’s face it, like him or not Farve is still a good QB!

  4. Vegas Brian says:

The thought of Farve in a Bears uniform is just about enough to make me puke. The last thing I want to see is Brett Farve in a news conference crying again about retiring for good and this time with a Bears hat on. Bad enough he went and played at the Vikings…. but the Bears? Also, he is past veteran. Isn’t he like 60 by now? This idea shouldn’t have even spoken out loud. End of discussion. Let’s talk about something exciting… like maybe having our Cubbies pick up Albert Pujols!

  5. racerz4 says:

I agree that Brett Favre will play for the Bears.Hes is a winning quarter back.He got blamed from last years Vikings bad records oviously the vikings isnt the Vikings a year before, coz of their injured main players. But Brett knows how to win,he is still way better than any of most quarter backs out there rightnow.Bears will thinkk about this, they should sign him.

  6. John Rehor says:

He wont come to Chicago, but the storyline would be epic. Imagine that: Brett Favre, the enemy of Chicago for 20 seasons, comes to Chicago to save their season.

  7. D. E. Patton says:

This is crazy because the same thought about him going to Chicago crossed my mind and I actually visioned and entertained the idea. But that was wishful thinking. It won’t happen, but if it did, I would enjoy the rest of the season for sure.

  8. ChrisInMilwaukee says:

The key with Favre is keeping pressure off him. In his younger, MVP days, he was an elusive muther. It wasn’t about the arm strength, or the streak, or the records, it was watching him pull a Houdini in the face of a certain sack and then improvising a miracle. That game winner vs the 49ers in 2009 – that was a near every week occurence in the mid-90′s. For a while he was the Michael Jordan of QB’s, you could not believe what you just saw.
But now, he’s Dan Marino with shot feet. The tricks Martz has pulled to keep Cutler upright are just not gonna work with Favre. Just like having Peterson wasn’t enough in 2010, having Forte won’t do it in 2011.
But what a storyline it would be.

  9. S. Owens says:

I think it would be hard, even for a veteran QB, to step in after two-thirds of the season, learn a new offense, and take a team to the playoffs. As far as we know, Favre wouldn’t be in “football shape” and I don’t think that any amount of money would be the determining factor for him. His family would certainly have a big say on making such a decision, plus he is probably quietly mending fences with the Packers, leading up to future Packer Hall of Fame and Pro Football Hall of Fame awards. If I had to bet on it, my money would be on his retirement being permanent this time.

go go we want brett favre! and rock’n'roll, wtf. screw common sense and love legend
