There’s no way to spin the magnitude of the Jay Cutler injury. He was playing like one of the best quarterbacks in football and was pushing the Chicago Bears into the conversation with the other elite teams in football. Many Green Bay Packers fans felt that the Bears were the team they feared the most. Many of us Bears fans shared the same feelings.

However, most Bears fans are walking around with a black cloud of defeat over their collective heads. The Bears are still a 7-3 football team and the fifth wildcard team. Considering that the Bears are entering the less difficult part of their schedule, they need to take care of business against inferior teams in order to secure a playoff berth. If the reports on Cutler are accurate, he should be back if the Bears reach the playoffs.

I refuse to feel sorry for the Bears. And from what I’m hearing, the Bears don’t want you to feel sorry for them either. They believe in Caleb Hanie’s ability to lead this team. Brian Urlacher is telling us that the defense will step up and play better. Lovie Smith tells us that things are going to be fine. Injuries are a part of football. Just ask the Green Bay Packers that overcame at least 15 injured players last season. Did that impact their season? Did the Packers quit? I would say that winning the Super Bowl proved that good teams overcome adversity. It is now time for the Bears to overcome this obstacle and prove that they’re a complete football team. Or quite possibly, they’re not and they’ll be home for the playoffs. Either way, it’s really hard to judge this team without seeing Hanie take a snap.

I’m really getting annoyed by everyone’s speculation on what will happen down the stretch. Instead of getting all worked up about this team, maybe fans should wait and see what happens next. Many people have doubted the Bears going on two seasons, and just when they think this team is down or done, the Bears get better and prove everyone wrong. I remember last season that experts like Trent Dilfer refused to give the Bears any credit and kept waiting for this team to fail. Well, they were seven points away from a trip to the Super Bowl last season. This season, after starting the season 2-3 but have rattled off five wins in a row including impressive wins over the Lions, Eagles and Buccaneers. Even in the first game of the season, the Bears put a hurting on the Falcons. It wasn’t all because of Cutler. While he’s played a huge part of this team’s success, the defense and special teams are amazing. By creating turnovers and securing good field position, it helps the offense produce results. In a very difficult circumstance, Hanie showed a lot of courage and moxie against the Packers in the championship game last season. With a bit more time to prepare, perhaps we will see a solid effort. Instead of speculating and getting worked up into a tizzy, let’s just see what happens in Oakland on Sunday.
