So the cat is finally out the bag, after missing 2 weeks of training camp, the Chicago Bears have announced that Brian Urlacher, who last trained on July 31st, has undergone arthroscopic surgery on his left knee.

An NFL source supposedly confirmed the procedure had taken place early on Tuesday, this was later confirmed on the Bears official website, along with a statement that this will not affect the timetable set for Urlacher’s  injury.

In honesty I would tend to agree with this quote taken from Urlacher on Sunday when initially asked about his timetable for a return:

“Sept. 9, I’ll be ready to play for sure. That’s really all that matters to me. Preseason games and all these practices, I’d love to be out there. But I’m not going to put myself in jeopardy of missing the first game.”

Hopefully for the sake of the Bears and their fan base, this timetable for recovery will end up holding out to be true. I still find it immensely frustrating we are even in this position.

The win against the Minnesota Vikings in week 17 of the 2011 regular season meant nothing, and it certainly wasn’t worth all of the current aggravation and disruption it is causing.

One point of concern for me was that Urlacher has said he expects this injury to cause a certain amount of issue throughout the season, although with this a note of caution, this comment comes from pre-surgery, and may have been part of the reason why the go ahead was given for the procedure in the first place.

One point that was raised by Twitter user @yourboyroy that I had never considered, the Bears play two games to begin this season within four days of each other. If Urlacher is not 100% leading up to the Indianapolis Colts game, I would hope the Bears would push his return back those 4 days, for the massive rivalry matchup with the Green Bay Packers, on Thursday September 13th at Lambeau Field.

If the Bears can’t beat the Colts without Urlacher, then frankly it is going to be a long season.
