Dennis Wierzbicki-US PRESSWIRE

So the Chicago Bears offense looked pretty darn good against the Washington Redskins in the first half of their preseason matchup at Soldier Field.

First of all a small taster of another piece I am preparing for later today, what in holy hell is Lovie Smith and Dave Toub playing at making Devin Hester field punts in preseason. We know what he can do, the league knows what he can do, and he should go into the Hall of Fame for what he has done on special teams for the Chicago Bears.

Hester doesn’t need practise, and putting him in harm’s way before absolutely necessary is frankly idiotic, I would have thought Smith would have learnt after the Brian Urlacher injury in the meaningless game against Minnesota Vikings last season.

Anyway below are my notes and observations of things that stood out to me in the first half they take on a live blog format, as I will be publishing a full game review later today, once I have had time to review the tape of the game.

Solid blocking combined with great route running by Brandon Marshall creates a bread and butter deep completion that Jay Cutler will eat up for breakfast. This is frankly a brilliant sign of things to come for the Bears

Hester ran more than one good route, especially some nice hitch routes, that if Cornerbacks don’t stay tight on him, will allow him the space he needs to show off his ST moves after the catch.

JaMarcus Webb LT: frankly the “other guy” played a completely different game today, on occasion in the first drive, he did an especially nice job of blocking his original man, and then chipping at a late blitzer, allowing Cutler more than enough time complete his pass to Alshon Jeffery.

Michael Bush looked brilliant in his battering ram role, he put on some nice moves on the goal line, following some solid run blocking on his way to 2 td’s on the day.

Jeffery was called on a BS penalty from the refs (who coincidently were worse than poor all day), I have no issue with him sticking up for himself in pre-season like this, to show these vets he will not be pushed around.

Matt Forte was not lying when he said he was faster and stronger than last season, with the little he had to work with he should some solid explosion, and a willingness to try to run people over as well.

Cutler is not messing around this season, the league should be on alert, this Mike Tice offense means some serious business, 4 drives, 3 scores, 2 redzone td’s. It may only be preseason, but you have got to think the Green Bay Packers and Detriot Lions will be playing closer attention to some Bears games in the near future.

Roberto Garza on four occasions that I counted at a glance, snapped the ball low when the Bears where playing out of the shotgun, this is the second week I have seen this, and reports out of camp say it has been much the same in practise, this has got to improve.

Chris Spencer frankly sucked, again, he needs to pull it together for next week, and prove he is actually interested in starting for this team, as there are plenty of guys chomping at the bit behind him wanting to take his spot.

In my opinion Chris Williams was slightly better than Webb at LT in the first half but there really wasn’t an awful lot in it, both guys gave solid accounts of themselves, it should be a good battle to watch over the coming weeks.

All in all the first half was a vast improvement on last weeks display against the Denver Broncos.
