Dennis Wierzbicki-US PRESSWIRE

The Chicago Bears released their first injury report of the 2012 season which, surprisingly, only listed four players. Based on the wear and tear of the preseason I thought for sure this list would. Luckily for the Bears only a few key players are being closely monitored and it looks like big bad Brian Urlacher is actually going to suit up on Sunday against the Indianapolis Colts.

Third string running back Lorenzo Booker is listed with a head injury and did not participate in practice today. This isn’t a huge blow to the Bears’ offensive game plan as it is highly unlikely Booker would see the field this coming Sunday even if he was 100%. He might have gotten some time in on special teams but his contribution would have been negligible on the offensive side of the ball.

Punter Adam Podlesh is still nursing a sore hip and was a limited participant in practice today. It would be real nice to see Podlesh suiting up on Sunday as this guy is as solid as they come for punters. However, backup punter Ryan Quigley had a solid showing throughout the preseason and will be serviceable so long as Podlesh’s injury isn’t a long term deal.

Starting safety Chris Conte was also a limited participant in practice today. Even though Conte suffered a separated shoulder in Week 3 of the preseason, I believe the Bears coaches are erring on the side of caution with Conte right now. You should expect to see him starting opposite Major Wright come Sunday.

And then there was one: starting middle linebacker and team leader Brian Urlacher was a full participant in practice for the second day in a row. This is excellent news as it shows Urlacher’s knee did not flair up after Tuesday’s practice.

Despite this display, I am staying steadfast in my opinion that the Bears coaches and front office would be total morons if they decided to play Urlacher against one of the worst teams in the league. The Bears will need Urlacher throughout the entire season; not just the first couple of weeks.
