The fact that the Chicago Blackhawks organization has become something of a feeding ground for clubs looking to find their future front office executives is something that benefits the Hawks big time when it comes to making deals, whether it’s in the summer or at the trade deadline.

The last two summers have seen two assistant general managers take on full time gigs with other teams, with Kevin Cheveldayoff getting a gig with the Winnipeg Jets last season and Marc Bergevin taking on the position for the Montreal Canadiens.

We saw the benefits last year during the trade deadline, when the Hawks acquired Johnny Oduya from Cheveldayoff and the Jets for nothing more than a pair of draft picks. Like him or not, it was a nice addition for the Hawks and with a deep system, they could afford to surrender a couple of picks.

Now with Bergevin in Montreal, there’s a potential to deal with the Habs, and there have been whispers about it all summer long.

The obvious fit here is Tomas Plekanec, who would fit the bill perfectly as a second line center for the Hawks. He’s a guy that knows how to put up points, win faceoffs, and is a dependable player on the power play. That spot is still the Hawks’ biggest weakness, and the Habs could certainly use a bit of help on the defensive end.

Regardless of the players involved, there is now another connection out there for Stan Bowman to wheel and deal with. We all know how he likes to deal with teams and general managers that he’s comfortable with. Bergevin in Montreal adds another one to the mix and I’d be surprised if we didn’t hear of some discussions between the two sides, whether it’s before the season begins or at the deadline, before this season is over.
