Though it hasn’t been widely discussed, the question over whether or not the Chicago Blackhawks will bring back an alternate jersey has been an interesting query the past couple of summers.

The Hawks did away with their most recent alternate before last season. The black sweater pictured above was essentially the same one the Blackhawks wore in the Winter Classic, when they lost to the Detroit Red Wings.

In the dead of summer, especially with the CBA talks holding up any real trade negotiations and keeping everything at a standstill, jerseys for the new season have become a more popular topic. And with the Hawks, there is talk of them resurrecting their older black alternates for the new season.

From Icethetics:

Early reports had the Chicago Blackhawks  resurrecting their old black third jersey after retiring their Winter Classic-inspired alternate in 2011. Now, that may no longer be true.

Reebok’s message to retailers had indicated the Hawks would have no third jersey, just like last season. But more recent updates list a “black” third jersey for the club. But does that mean the 1996 black or the 2009 Winter Classic black?

The 1996 jersey was essentially what the Hawks have now with their red and white sweaters, just in black. That’s the uniform that may make the most sense for the Blackhawks to go back to.

Eventually, the Hawks are likely going to go back to an alternate jersey. There’s too much potential from a sales standpoint to not have one. I do think that it will be something similar to the ’96 jersey, but until it’s actually unveiled, we have no idea what direction they’d go in.
