Cubs Sign Rodrigo Lopez, Matt Tolbert To Minor League Deals
With the Cubs pretty much set with most of their roster for the 2012 season, save the couple of players that they are rumored to be willing to trade, what’s left for the Cubs are the depth signings to battle for bench spots and spend most of their time toiling in Triple A.
They already signed Alfredo Amezaga to a minor league deal last week, giving them a super utility guy to add to the mix for spring training.
This week, the Cubs added a couple more recognizable names that are more likely to be spending much of their time in 2012 over in Iowa.
The first signing was Rodrigo Lopez, obviously a familiar face to the Cubs. Chicago dealt for him last season after their experimenting with Casey Coleman and James Russell in the rotation didn’t go so well. And don’t forget about Doug Davis.
The Cubs have made no secret of their goal to add starting pitching depth, which Lopez certainly fits. He made 16 starts for the Cubs in 2011 and posted a decent 4.42 ERA. He could be an option for the bullpen, depending on what happens in spring training, but he’s more likely to end up in the minors.
It looks as if the Cubs have definitely accomplished their goal of getting eight or nine starters on the roster.
The much quieter signing, which has yet to be announced by really anyone is the add of former Minnesota Twin Matt Tolbert. This shouldn’t be seen as anything that relates to anything intriguing, as Tolbert is strictly for depth and will be in Triple A. In fact, the only evidence we have of a Tolbert signing is this tweet by Twins third baseman Danny Valencia.
Nonetheless, Tolbert is a versatile guy that can play all over the infield and appeared for 87 games for Minnesota last season, mostly thanks to all of their injuries.
