April 29, 2005 was a great day in Chicago Cubs history as two 300-game winners took to the mound at Minute Maid Park in Houston to square off.

Cubs great Greg Maddux took on Houston Astros star Roger Clemens in a pitchers duel that would finish in a 3-2 Cubs victory.

The last time prior to this two 300-game winners took to the mound against one another was in 1987, when Los Angeles Angels (then California Angels) smooth right hander Don Sutton defeated the Minnesota Twins, and one of the all-time great southpaws, Steve Carlton.

Greg Maddux went six innings for the Cubs on that Friday evening, giving up only seven hits, while striking out three, and allowing only two earned runs. Clemens went seven innings for the Astros, giving up seven hits, and three earned runs. It turned out to be just the pitchers’ duel fans were promised that day at Minute Maid Park in Houston.

Houston native Jeromy Bernitz provided the offensive punch for the Cubs, going 3-4 with two runs batted in, including a home run off of Clements in the top of the 7th which put the Cubs for the first-time since their two-run second inning, and turned out to be the game winner.

The Cubs would go on to finish the 2005 season 79-82 while the Astros finished 88-73 in the regular season, and continued on to the World Series for the first time in franchise history, only to be swept by the Cubs cross-town rivals, the Chicago White Sox, four games to zero.
