Thomas Campbell-US PRESSWIRE

The Chicago Cubs have added Michael Bowden to their 40 man roster and recalled him from AAA while moving Ian Stewart to the 60 day disabled list, which means the Cubs didn’t have to lose anyone to waivers. Bowden was brought over from the Boston Red Sox in the Marlon Byrd trade earlier this year, and unfortunately didn’t fare to well in the first several outings as a Cub.

Bowden will head to the bullpen and give Dale Svuem a right handed arm for the rest of the year. Bowden is only 25 so there’s still time to figure it out, and I think the move to AAA was ultimately good for him. He wasn’t getting consistent work, and it’s INCREDIBLY difficult to stay sharp when you pitch once a week. He did extremely well in AAA which leads me to think he’ll be just fine for the rest of the year if the Cubs can find consistent innings and a consistent role for him.

Michael Bowden was a highly touted prospect that has never really had a real chance to pitch consistently in the big leagues. With the Chicago Cubs having the season they’re having, there’s no reason to not let him pitch for the rest of the year in hopes Chris Bosio and company can help him figure out what it takes to be a reliever at the big league level.

We’ll see what the Cubs have in store for Bowden for the remainder of the season.

The Cubs sent down Brooks Raley to make room for Bowden.
