Jake Roth-US PRESSWIRE

Last night against the Kansas City Royals, Jake Peavy pitched good enough for the Chicago White Sox to win, but once again the White Sox offense didn’t show up.  This has happened to many times to the 31 year old right hander.  Last night, Peavy went 6 2/3 innings giving up three earned runs on seven hits, which is a quality start.  But of course the offense didn’t show up really besides a Gordon Beckham home run to lead off the game and another run scored later.

On the season, Peavy is 9-8 with a 3.08 ERA in 22 starts.  He has pitched 154.2 innings while giving up 131 hits with a 138/34 K/BB ratio.  In five of the eight losses for Peavy, he has had a quality start.  April 28 against the Boston Red Sox, he lost 1-0 in U.S. Cellular Field.  In four straight starts between June 13 and June 30, Peavy was 0-4 while still sporting a 2.70 ERA to go with two complete games.  Only three of those games were quality starts and in the other start he gave up four runs.

Manager Robin Ventura and pitching coach Don Cooper have not held Peavy back in any way this season and it has worked in their favor.  The Sox have believed with all their starters that pitch count is not that big of a deal, but a little extra rest in between starts is the way they like to do things.  Especially with young guys like Chris Sale and Jose Quintana who have not pitched the inning amount that will be expected should the White Sox make the playoffs.

Overall, Peavy has been great this season and may be considered for MLB Comeback Player of the Year.  He has been one of the reasons that this team is leading the AL Central and will be fighting for a playoff spot down the stretch.
