Jerry Lai-US PRESSWIRE

The 2008 Cubs were a special team. Even before the season, a big deal was made about it being the 100th year anniversary from their last title.

The Cubs didn't fold under the pressure during the regular season. They were the best in the league with a 97-64 record. All but two hitters had an OPS+ under 100, and every starter had an ERA+ over 100. They were the team to beat.

Unfortunately for the Cubs, they were beat and beat badly. The Dodgers swept the Cubs in three games.

15 Rants to “The 15 Best Teams that Didn’t Win a Championship”

  1. Joe Mama says:

You forgot the 2000 UC Bearcats basketball led by Kenyon Martin. They would have most likely won a title if not for his horrific injury in the C-USA tourney.

  2. Goergs says:

One of the early 90′s Bills teams needs to be on this list.

  3. Bryan Lutz says:

Joe, didn’t think of the Bearcats. With the NCAA tournament, it’s very easy for the best team to lose. Could probably do a best 15 just on that.

Goergs, those Bills teams were good, but nothing all-time great really like the Rams and Vikings were suppose to be.

  4. Texas Snickerdoodle II says:

Can’t we cry together just a little bit for those “almost” Texas Rangers of 2011? One strike away from a World Championship – Twice! In the same game! I haven’t slept good since.

  5. jdblue842 says:

For number 6. “I am a huge proponent of the BCS. Most of the time it gets it right. I don’t want a playoff because I don’t want unworthy teams winning a championship.”
How would an unworthy team win the championship?? If they beat the teams that were “worthy,” would it not then mean this team was worthy enough to compete in the BCS championship game? That to me is better than watching a BCS championship game based on a faulty BCS system.

  6. Kris says:

I think the 1994 Undefeated Penn State Football team deserves to be on this list, the hard part is who do you take off?

  7. Joe says:

The 2008 Cubs? Seriously?? A 97 win team is one of the best never to win a title? ’95 Indians, ’98 and 99 Braves, 2002 Yankees, 93 Braves, 2003 Yankees, 2011 Phillies, etc…all better than that Cubs team.

  8. Dave says:

’97 Orioles, lead wire to wire & folded in playoffs. tHE LAST hoorah for this team…

  9. Dirk says:

The Los Angeles Rams from 1966 to 1970 should have won a few Super Bowls. Fearsome Foursome, Roman Gabriel, Jack Snow, etc.

    • Mark says:

Specifically, the 1967 Rams that went 11-1-2, defeated (in the regular season)the eventual Champion Green Bay Packers in one of the all-time great football games ever played and were so very well coached by George Allen. Easily one of the very best non-champion teams ever.

  10. David says:

    ’94 Nittany Lions
    ’76 Pittsburgh Steelers

  11. Bryan Lutz says:

    @Joe

Reason why I put the Cubs on the list was the history of it. Being the 100 year anniversary it was hyped all season that “This was the Year”!

There are A LOT of baseball teams that could be on here, but it’s hard to distinguish who exactly is all-time great that didn’t win. I did consider all those teams though.

Thanks for the other comments, everybody. It appears I did miss a couple. Limiting it to 15 for a category so broad is more difficult than you think!

  12. David Sabolcik says:

How about the 1991 UNLV Running Rebels…undefeated, averaging 27 ppg winning margin on the season a year after trouncing Duke by 30 in the title game? I’d say this should be #2 overall on this list.

  13. Clint says:

1991 UNLV IS AN OBVIOUS TOP 5

[...] I’m a total sucker for lists like this. Who are the 15 best teams to NOT win a championship? This seems to be a little heavy on teams from the past 20 or so years. However, these are the kinds of lists that open up the types of debates that my friends have which encouraged Carter and I to start this site. Although, I’m not sure #9 should be on there since that team technically never existed (wink wink)- Rant Sports [...]
