Chiefs are planning to retain Romeo Crennel and remove interim tag from his title. Move would be popular in the locker room.

After going 2-1 in his final three games to close out the season, Romeo Crennel will be back as the Kansas City Chiefs head coach in 2012, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Crennel was named the interim head coach after general manager Scott Pioli fired Todd Haley following the Chiefs loss in Week 14.

Kansas City played pretty well in the final three games down the stretch. In Crennel’s first game at the helm, they shocked the then undefeated Packers in Week 15 and then gave the Raiders all they could handle in a hard fought battle the following week. KC closed out the season with a 7-3 victory over the Broncos.

It is great to see Crennel getting another head coaching gig considering his first stint with the Browns was not very good. In four seasons in Cleveland, the former Patriots defensive coordinator compiled a 24-40 record. It looked as though the Browns were turning the corner after the 2007 season in which they went 10-6, but they missed out on the playoffs that year and followed that up with a 4-12 record in 2008.

This decision to bring him back for at least one more season is based solely on how well the Chiefs olayers like Crennel, which you could easily see during the final three games of the season. A little of that probably had to do with Haley being gone, whose fiery personality wore thin with a lot of Chiefs players.

Best of luck to Crennel in 2012. It is hard to find better a man across the league than the 64-year-old.
