Video: Paralyzed Woman Bungee Jumps While in Her Wheelchair

By Steve Palumbo

I’m not exactly a daredevil, In fact I have a tremendous fear of heights, which made what one wheelchair bound thrill seeker did even more amazing to me and it was all caught on video.

Paraplegic Christine Rougoor bungee jumped 150 feet off a bridge – in her wheelchair! The 24-year-old is no stranger to dangerous activities. In fact she became paralyzed after a motor cross accident in 2008. Once an adrenaline junky, always an adrenaline junky. Rougoor was determined not to let her disability get in the way of her desire to be daring.

In the video you see exactly how much preparation and effort goes into a jump like this. I imagine with the added weight of the chair plus the awkward shape, all necessary precautions must be taken to eliminate any type of mishaps.

Besides the obvious, a stunt like this is very different from a standard jump. Instead of the customary bungee experience in which the jumper either walks or leaps off a platform, Rougoor had to be helped off the bridge. To be more specific she had to be lifted up by a group of individuals and hurled over the guard rail.

I absolutely commend Rougoor for her bravery and inspiration. It’s all too often able bodied people say they can’t do something. But as Rougoor showed us, you can do anything you want if you want it bad enough and put your mind to it.
