Third Grader Makes Half-Court Buzzer Beater

Source: YouTube

Half-court buzzer beaters are always an exciting moment for the winning team. The month of February has been quite the month for the last second shots when it comes to NCAA basketball. However, I think that this video may surpass all of those half-court shots.

This time around we have a little third grader making the last second, half-court shot to win the game. Mason Kunkel is his name and he plays recreational basketball for the Dubuque Youth Sports Association in Iowa.

Right after the dark team makes their two free throws, you can tell that the light blue team was disappointed and had no hope of winning the game. The game was already in overtime, so it’s hard to tell if they would have played a second overtime; a lot of recreational leagues set time limits for the young ones.

So it may not have been a full regulation court, but it’s pretty impressive for an 8-9 year old league.  Either way, the three-pointer counted in for the club basketball team and the little boys were definitely excited.

The only thing I found disappointing about the video was that there were not many fans at the game. Well, maybe there were fans but not very many ran out onto the court to celebrate the buzzer beater. At least the kids seemed overly excited to win the game.

I don’t really know if you could consider this an “upset” or not considering youth basketball isn’t the most competitive sport at the age of five, but I’m sure this is a moment that Kunkel will never forget.
