A few notes here from Boulder:

-Freshman forward Damiene Cain has once again left the team citing personal reasons. He will no longer be with Tad Boyle and the rest of the Buffs for the remainder of the season. It is still unclear whether or not Cain will rejoin the team after this semester. Before the season even started Cain informed Boyle that he decided not to play basketball at the collegiate level, rather opting to focus on academics instead. After meeting with Tad just before the season started, Cain was reinstated and began practicing with the team as a non-scholarship player. He appeared in seven games with the Buffs and averaged 1.1 points, 1.3 rebounds and 7.4 minutes per game. The Buffs resume their season tomorrow night as the Arizona State Sun Devils travel to Boulder.

-CU’s football team have begun their winter conditioning program today looking to improve from a tough first season in the Pac-12. Strength and conditioning coach Malcolm Blacken is in a much more comfortable position this year than last as he has acclimated himself and the players to the program here at CU. Blacken has a much better feel for the personnel that he is working with and what he can do to improve their play on the field. Players were broken into three different groups today for their workouts based on competing positions i.e receivers and defensive backs. The winter conditioning work will continue until March 9, the Friday prior to the start of spring drills on Saturday, March 10. One of the main things that Blacken will work on during these sessions is improving team speed. The Buffs’ lack of speed was exposed in their first season in the new conference and is a main focus for Jon Embree and Blacken to work on in these workouts. After winning 2 of their final three games of the season the Buffs have some momentum heading into the off-season and “Coach Black” is looking to sustain that progress during the winter conditioning program.

-CU has announced the date for the 2012 Football Preview Luncheon and the featured speaker. The luncheon is scheduled for February 2nd at the Sheraton Downtown Denver Hotel with former wide-receiver/kick-returner Jeremy Bloom as the guest speaker. Alongside CU head coach Jon Embree, Bloom, who played from 2002-2003, will speak about the upcoming season and what to look expect from the Buffs in their second season in the Pac-12.
