Memphis Grizzlies Looking To Deal O.J Mayo?
Kyle Terada-US PRESSWIRE

For the past year or so Memphis Grizzlies guard O.J Mayo has been the talk of many trades to various destinations. Now it seems that Mayo will have to go through the rigors and pain of possibly getting traded as a new rumor, first reported by Sports Illustrated, has popped up. It is being said through sources that the Grizzlies might actually be looking to deal Mayo and are expecting a No.1 pick in return for the former third overall pick in the 2008 draft.

Mayo, who is now coming off the bench for the Grizzlies, has certainly been doing his part for the team this season. Mayo is averaging 24:30 minutes, 11.3 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 1.8 assists per game. Mayo’s three point percentage this season, 44 percent,  is also up noticeably from his overall average of 38.1 percent. Mayo also had a career high six three’s last weekend against the Sacramento Kings and his rebounding average of 3.2 per game is up from last season’s of 2.4 per game.

Although the Grizzlies are being linked to multiple reports of possibly dealing Mayo Memphis Commercial Appeal has reported that Mayo will more than likely not be dealt and that Grizzlies management is not seriously thinking about dealing Mayo. It also added that Mayo’s restricted free-agency status is not a concern to them as of yet. The last piece of information concerning Mayo was this, ”Mayo likely will remain with the Griz this season because of his productivity and the Grizzlies’ ability to control his future with the right of first refusal on contract offers.”

If it comes to the point where Mayo will indeed be moved there are more than a few teams interested who could use Mayo’s scoring off the bench. The biggest team that comes to mind is the Los Angeles Lakers and their need for a scorer off the bench. The Lakers bench, ever since they dealt Lamar Odom to the Dallas Mavericks, has been inept and unable to score. The Lakers are currently 20th in the NBA in scoring with 92.3 points per game. The addition of O.J Mayo off the bench would certainly help increase that number dramatically.
